چکیده

In this article we claim that the linguistic-centred view within hypermedia systems needs refinement through a semioticbased approach before real interoperation between media can be achieved. We discuss the problems of visual signification for images and video in dynamic systems, in which users can access visual material in a non-linear fashion. We describe how semiotics can help overcome such problems, by allowing descriptions of the material on both denotative and connotative levels. Finally we propose an architecture for a dynamic semiotic-aware hypermedia system. 1998 ACM Computing Classification System: H.5.2, I.3.4, I.3.8

Connotative Interpretations of Sexuality - Related Terms

The relationship between a word and its possible meanings is known as semantics (Megginson, 1996). Depending on context, this relationship may add complexity to interpersonal communication. The very mention of particular words can produce two types of meaning: denotative, or referential, and connotative, or representational. A person may be able to give the denotative meaning (i.e., dictionary ...

Sentic API: A Common and Common-Sense Knowledge API for Cognition-Driven Sentiment Analysis

The bag-of-concepts model can represent semantics associated with natural language text much better than bags-of-words. In the bagof-words model, in fact, a concept such as cloud_computing would be split into two separate words, disrupting the semantics of the input sentence. Working at concept-level is important for tasks such as opinion mining, especially in the case of microblogging analysis...

A Contrastive Study of the Connotative Meaning of Linguistic Signs in English and Chinese

According to G. Leech’s classification of meaning, the denotative meaning of a word is different from its connotative one. The denotation of a linguistic sign may be the same in different languages, but their connotations may be quite different. The paper makes a contrastive analysis of the connotative meaning of linguistic signs in English and Chinese, such as Color terms, Kinship terms, Anima...
